That is a really good idea. I just might look into that.

I am a fanatic about not wasting food. Drives my family nuts. I always tell them to just take a little and if you want more take more instead of taking too much and then deciding you are full
I have been trying to train my husband for the past 10 years to not dump so much ketchup on his plate! I think he does it just to spite me. I don't care if its free or if I have 10 more bottles- it is alot of work for all of us to get these deals and I hate to see them wasted!

I go crazy when I am by my niece. Her kids will ask for a hard boiled egg or something- take one bite and walk away, and 5 minutes later she throws it in the garbage!

And as far as wasting other things, I think you DD got it into her head that you have plenty and its ok to waste.

My 8 year old DD has a friend who comes over and is like that too (Mrs Heidi..I am hungry) then I get her a snack and she wastes it. Then wants something else...I had to tell her no.
Do you feel bad when you tell your daughters friend no? I have no problem telling my kids no, but if it's someone else...I guess I don't want them going home saying that I never fed them! !

A while back my oldest daughter had a friend stay over night, and she just wasted so much food!! I can't remember what we had for supper but I remember she only took a few bites of it and said she didn't like it. They had snacks all night and when I got up in the morning there was SOOOO much in the trash. Those Oreo sticks with cream, fruit roll ups, popcorn, just TONS of stuff. I asked my daughter about it and she told me her friend just didn't like anything, and kept telling her she was hungry, and then she would throw it away. I mean what kid dosn't like those Oreo cream stick things????

Tonight I let the kids have some pop tarts for a snack and my daughter took two bites out of it and threw the rest away!! I was so mad, cause one of the other kids would have eaten it or even saved the other one for later. She said, but Mom, you have 10 boxes out in the garage. I told her I didn't care if I had 100 boxes out in the garage, we don't waste food!! I really hope my kids don't think they can just waste food just cause we have so much of it. Maybe her friend is rubbing bad habbits off on her or something. Or maybe her friend saw how much food we had and thought she could just waste it. I don't know but it just really irrated me when she said that..."but we have 10 boxes in the garage"
I hate wasting food/money/time/ anything!
I would be more concerned that your daughters friend has the beginning of an eating disorder. Kids know they need to hide any abnormal eating habits, especially if someone in their life is pressuring them about their weight. It is easy to hide that you hardly ate anything if your mom is mad that your wasting food. She also may live in a house that doesn't sit down to dinner. She puts food on her plate then throws it away. No one is paying close enough attention so she can get away with it. She is hungry but she feels guilty about eating. If after a bite she says she doesn't like it, no one will think too much about it. If after 2 bites she says she is full people will start to raise their eyebrows. Your daughter could start to copy her, but not really have an eating disorder.

I don't like those oreo sticks. They taste burnt. I gave them out for trick or treat.

I work with ten other women (at a preschool) and if we find something that our kids won't eat we pass it along to another staff member with kids. My kids eat anything.

It seems like maybe 10% of it is wasted, but if I don't buy as much then they all seem to want it.

I don't have as much a problem with veggies, but occasionally I have to throw out 1/2 a bag of salad.

I have had some problems with the kids taking an apple, then eating only 1/2 of it, but this is mostly since they didn't have time to finish it. When I cook (about 3/4 of the time) they know they can't grab a snack once I've started to cook dinner.

Usually it's too late to try to save fruit, I haven't found a good way to save it earlier other than to not buy it. I should probably get myself a juicer.
Go to this site http://my.tupperware.com/BEARKITTY and click on shop at the top... under the catagories there is a link for refrigerate. Check out the fridge smart containers, they are so wonderful for keeping lettuce, fruits, and vegies fresh beyond their normal expiration date.

I believe I waste very little.

My biggest source of waste is the fresh fruit. So I keep an eye on it and when I have too much, I cut it up (maybe a banana, an apple, a couple of oranges, a piece of melon, etc.) and divide it on plates on top of a bed of lettuce and put some French or Catalina dressing on it and we have it for lunch.

I also use the idea of the divided plastic containers with lid. I make up leftover meals on the plates and then they can be microwaved the next day with no extra preparation.

The bagged salads are wasteful because unless you can use them right away they rot in a day or so. It's better for me to buy a head of romaine lettuce, separate the leaves and soak them in ice water, drain and put in several ziploc bags before refrigerating. I have had lettuce last 10 days when put up like this.

Another thing that bugs me is the empty bottle of salad dressing that still has
some dressing in it. I add about two tablespoons of oil and a tablespoon of vinegar, shake and get another serving out of it before I throw out the bottle. I have rinsed out bbq sauce bottles with a little vinegar to get the rest of the product out of the bottle.

I fry the gizzards from a chicken or turkey and chop it up and give it to the cat. Also, when I open a can of cat food I give my cat only 1/3 or 1/2 of it and put the rest (the opened can) in a plastic container and refrigerate. Then during the day I give the cat some more when she has eaten the first amount. So I waste very little canned cat food and there is less to clean up.

I bought a set of the fridge smart containers last year. They are great! Fruit lasts a lot longer in them.

I know I first got the large fridge smart for lettuce because I never had a place to put the lettuce after I used a little bit of it... I would always waste the rest of it because it would rot in a baggie before I could use it again. Not no more. Then I got the other fridge smart set. I love them because I used to always forget about my fruits in veggies in the drawers of my fridge. Now I put them in the containers and I can see everything right in front of me. They stay really fresh.

That is what my friends and I do with new products that kids see on TV and just 'have to try' and then hate it. Remember those popsicle things that had gummy bugs in them? Gross! But my boys just were dying to try them.... on pop each was all it took--then off to a friend who has 5 kids, lol. Another friend has two kids and we do the same...

Why have everyone buy the same new (yucky) product?
