Default Growing mushrooms

Anybody know anything about growing mushrooms for eating? I'm interested in the kind that you buy in the store, but know nothing about growing them except that I have a hot, shady porch on which I want to grow something useful and edible. *Laugh* Any advice on mushrooms? (Not to be confused with shrooms.)

If you check with seed catalogs like Michigan Bulb (not sure if they actually have mushrooms, but I have seen them in catalogs), you should find the kits to grow. They require cool, dark locations and have to be grown on a rotting log. Sounds gross, but shrooms are a fungus and that is just the kind of environment they like. I think a basement would be an ideal location. Let me go look at my catalogs and I'll post when I find what I'm looking for

I grew them from a kit in my old damp basement and they were good. It was a fun project, years ago.

They are grown in caves at least in Pennsylvania, with lots of horse manure.

Thanks, guys! I looked at the kits, but I'm not sure how much the savings would be since some of the kits are pretty spendy. . Does anyone have any experience with it? Did you end up saving money in the long run? Anyone grown them from scratch?

Default Mushroom Growing Info

You might want to check out the little guide I wrote up and posted on growing shiitake and oyster mushrooms indoors. The same techniques could also be used to grow them outside if it wasn't too hot, and if they were kept cool. The guide also has links to places that sell different types of spores and spawn, and some aren't too too pricey.

I hope that helps!
