Default Wal-mart (and Target) to offer generic medications for $4.00 per prescription

Wow!!! Forget the prescription coupons. I checked out the list and all 3 of my prescriptions are on it. I specifically get the Lisinipril from Wal-mart because their $19-something price (used to be $16) is about $10 cheaper than everywhere else. Too bad I have to wait until next year to take advantage of this.

Also, Target is planning on matching the $4.00 Wal-mart price. It looks like the major chains are going to lose out, if they don't follow suit, because most people get all their prescriptions filled at the same store.

The list of $4 medications is linked further down the page under "Related Resources".

I heard on one of the stories that the special price is only for people who don't have insurance. I thought that sucked. I mean, that price is WAY lower than what anybody's copay is going to be. It seems like people will lie and say they don't have insurance, and then just go somewhere else to use their insurance when they need to.
ETA: From the link you posted, though, it looks like what I heard was wrong. I think probably what was said was "this will be available to the uninsured," and the reporter neglected to clarify that it is ALSO available to those with insurance.

At my Target, they actually had MORE prescriptions listed on their $4 list than Walmart did! 2 of my mom's were available at Target for $4 each that walmart wasn't offering!

I've been looking for the Target drug list also and can't find it. I read online that HEB is now countering Wal-mart with a $5 generic drug program and additional savings on other generic and name brand drugs. That's awesome and I wish we had them here. All the other states in our area now have the new program from Wal-mart and Target. But, they passed Louisiana over. So much for them being so concerned about the poor, since Louisiana is still recovering from the hurricanes and the recent floods that have made additional areas been declared disaster areas. If this is not a sad state that can use any bit of relief, I don't know what is.

I was recently reading an article from a few years ago about the high cost of generic drugs. The reporter researched it and found that the markup on some generic drugs is as great as 3000% TO 5000%. That's pretty incredible, since generics are supposed to be the low-cost alternative. Turns out, that 'cheap' $40 generic prescription may have only cost the pharmacy $2 to $5. That's practically highway robbery! Also, i've been reading the comments from Walgreens and CVS that they aren't going to match Wal-mart and Target because, according to Walgreens, 95% of their customers have some form of insurance and the typical co-pay is $5.30 or less. Also, because the drugs that Wal-mart will be discounting are the older and are already so cheap. That's all well and good. But, they are totally ripping off the cash customers. If they are so old and cheap, how come they charge cash customers so much for them? Wal-mart has added my dosage of Lisinopril-HCTZ to the list (Happy when it comes here!). Both Walgreen's and CVS charge $26 to $27-something for it. That's definitely not very cheap! If it's so old and cheap that Wal-mart can charge only $4 for it and still break even or make a small profit (because we know Wal-mart isn't planning on losing much money on the deal), then the regular price must be a case of serious price gouging. Way to take advantage of those without insurance.

Yesterday, I went to a Walmart to fill my son's antibiotic prescription. It only cost $8 because it was a double bottle/dose. With our insurance, we usually pay $5 for regular dose. So, I guess it was $4 for regular bottle. The price was good, and I could use my RX coupon from CVS there.

However, they were very crowded and very slow!! They told me to come back in 20 min. So, I did. Then they told me my medicine was not ready, come back in 20 min!!! I had 2 kids and a DH who is currently suffering from a bad lower backache in the car waiting for me to get the medicine. Since DS has a strap throat, he is not supposed to be in public place. The whole thing should have taken about 30 min. Instead, it took me more than 1 hour...

I seriously considered taking my DS's prescription to another store like CVS and Walgreens when the guy told me it was not ready yet... I might have saved a couple of dollars, but it didn't worth my family's time, especially when I have injured and sick people waiting...

Target has expanded the $4 generics to ALL of their US pharmacies. Yeah!!! Wal-mart skipped over us, and a lot of other states. But, I would gladly go to Target to save some bucks, eventhough they're across town. If Wal-mart doesn't bring the $4 generics to Louisiana by early next month, my next refill will be at Target.

I see A&P / Superfresh/ Sav-A-Center now has a prescription drug plan of their own. $9.99 for a 90 day supply of generics. I wouldn't have even given them a thought because they charge $9.99 to join the club. But, I see that their list of drugs is a bit different. They are the only ones I have found to include Clonidine 0.3 mg. I've been paying $12-something for it at Wal-mart (the cheapest price) for a 30 day supply. Convenient, since I get my other 2 prescriptions there for $4 each. But, I think it would be well worth the $9.99 enrollment fee i'd pay at SAC because the $19.98 price for the first 90-day supply is like half the price for the same deal at Wal-mart. Also, every refill will only be $9.99. So, my yearly price for that drug will drop from more than $150 to around $40. A tremendous savings!
