Boston Bombings and a New Reason to Stockpile Frugally

The Boston bombings have taught us many things. Some we already knew, such as the resilience of the human spirit, how easily ordinary people become heroes, and the strength of a community all working together. It also has taught us some other, more practical lessons, such as to always be aware in crowds, to report suspicious activity, and to be prepared for the unthinkable. One of the many photos of that time that sticks in my head from the Boston bombings is the image of a police officer delivering two gallons of milk to a young family who couldn’t leave … Continue reading

Organize Your Stockpile by Becoming a Shelf Life Expert

I’m always on the look out for good stock up opportunities. When something goes on sale, can be “purchased” for free with coupons, or is on a deep clearance, I instantly calculate how much of that item should come home with me. It is important to know how much, logically, you should stockpile of a particular item or category of items. For example: how many jars of peanut butter should be in your pantry  right now until the next great low price? How many boxes of pasta, packages of toilet paper or bottles of shampoo? it all depends on the … Continue reading

Yummy Ham Glaze for a Small Ham

The good quality ham was on sale this week at our local grocery store, so I picked up a small one for one of our meals this week. I wanted to give it some flavor with a ham glaze. Most recipes, unfortunately result in enough glaze for a large ham, one that can feed the entire family for three nights. Instead, I wanted to still be able to enjoy the flavor of a glaze, without having a gallon of glaze left over, using partial ingredients, such as a quarter of a can of pineapple juice, or being forced to purchase … Continue reading

I Lost Some of My Stockpile

When you improperly store your stockpile, you can wind up losing money. That is what happened to me. Don’t let it happen to you. The other day, I was packing up some sandwiches to take with us on one of our frugal summer adventures when I got to the last of the roll of plastic wrap. Since I try to buy ahead when things are on sale, and I have a small stockpile, I’m never worried when I run out of certain things. I just headed downstairs to the basement to pick up a new roll. It used to be … Continue reading

My Favorite Deals This Year

At year’s end, I like to look back at the deals I have done and see what savings I’ve achieved. I really liked the ones for Hunts, Keebler and Nabisco products, where you buy a certain amount and get $10 back. There was one that was store specific to Publix, which I could do several times for $10 gift cards. Then there are the ones that keep going…. My favorite kind of deal is the type which keeps on going, either through a program, or continuous credits such as Extra Care Bucks, or Register Rewards. I also got quite a … Continue reading

Smart Source, Red Plum, P&G, and Kellogg’s – Oh MY!

Don’t forget to get extra newspapers this weekend – there are a lot of coupons in the paper this Sunday, as I mentioned before. I’m ready to pounce Sunday morning on that CVS ECB deal for Electrasol/Finish. Those $2.50 coupons expire August 9. I think it is great to use these coupons to get ECBs – if you buy $20 worth of Electrasol or listed Lysol products, you will get $10 ECBs. Axe coupons from the May 17 Red Plum also expire August 9. Hurry to take advantage of the Axe deal for a free movie ticket at Walgreens. Print … Continue reading

Preparing for the Warehouse Grocery Store 2

In my last post, I started talking about how getting really prepared for a big trip at the local warehouse grocery store can save money. Of course, it can also save time, too. I consider a big warehouse grocery trip to be a project. If I do my prep work, I can save 40-50% off even the bulk prices! As mentioned in that first post, the weeks leading up to a big warehouse trip, I also evaluate what stock we currently have left. What items can I use up right now and incorporate into meals? This not only ensures that … Continue reading

Dollar Store Deals and Steals

So what can you buy at the Dollar Store with coupons? Plenty. Family Dollar and Dollar General, two large dollar store chains take coupons. They print coupons in their flyers. They encourage you to use coupons. Now, your mileage may vary on that – you may find individual managers who give you a hard time. So it pays to ask, especially on other chains or local dollar stores. My experience at Family Dollar and Dollar General here in Florida is that they do accept – and promote – coupons. Sometimes your run into the silly “one per purchase” cashier who … Continue reading

Surviving the Economy: Expect the Unexpected

I know that we are all tired of hearing about how awful the economy is and how things will probably get worse before they get better. While this may all be true, it doesn’t help us much in terms of our own financial situations. So I thought I would share some practical advice about what we can do now to ensure that our families survive the current economy. One big thing that we can all do right now is to watch ahead for the unexpected in terms of major expenses that might really do us in. With unemployment due to … Continue reading
