Chicken Jerky Treats Cause Canine Illness

Resist the begging, for chicken treats at least I always hate reporting sad stories, but when it comes to alerting pet owners to dangerous food contamination or anything similar, the facts are too important to ignore. According to MSN Vitals, the Food and Drug Administration has released a warning about the danger of chicken jerky dog treats. At first I thought this was yet another pet food recall, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Instead, it appears that chicken jerky treats for dogs, no matter the brand, might cause serious canine illness. The warning was issued after the … Continue reading

Dog Treats Causing Kidney Failure

What is it with the same horrible stories recurring again? First all the dog food recalls and now those chicken jerky treats I first posted about in November are in the news again. Late last year the FDA issued a warning that they’d been receiving reports that chicken jerky treats manufactured in China were making some dogs sick. The details were muddied: no one brand could be identified as causing problems, the FDA had been receiving reports on and off for years about illness related to these types of treats, and only issued warnings when the number got high enough. … Continue reading

Salmonella Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul: it conjures images of family, warm eyes and wet noses, and heartwarming stories about our furry family members. But right now it’s the opposite of wholesome; last week Diamond Pet Foods issued a recall of certain lots of their Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul adult dog food due to a Salmonella infection. The information for the potentially affected bags is as follows, including production codes and expiration dates: * Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul 35 lb. CLF0102B31XCW 27/JAN/2013, CLF0102B32XWR 28/JAN/2013 * Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Adult … Continue reading

Toy Troubles

Toys are a real problem in my house. Once we have children we’ll have to be careful about what toys are left lying around. At the moment we can’t have many toys for either the cats or the dog, and Chihiro has no one but herself to blame. Chihiro has one goal with every toy she finds: to consume it. When we first got her she came with a stuffed pink octopus toy. That lasted just a few weeks before she began tearing off pieces to eat. I got her another stuffed toy and a rope toy to replace her … Continue reading

When Your Cat Is A Food Thief

My cat Chrestomanci’s gluttony has continued to the point that it warrants another post. When I was trying to find ideas for how to address his overeating problems I scoured the internet for suggestions, but I didn’t find much advice. Thus I wanted to share my own experiences to help others in a similar situation. After observing the cats’ gluttony during the holidays, Jon and I performed an experiment. We’ve long suspected that Chrestomanci was eating some of Cole’s food. Usually we keep their bowls in the laundry room, which they can access via a cat door, so their food … Continue reading

Gluttony: Thy Name is Cat

After a week of intense holiday travels (we were on the road for at least 90 minutes almost every day), we’ve finally returned home. After doing so we discovered something that led to the latest chapter in Feeding Time in a Multiple Pet Household, or as I like to call it, Gluttony: Thy Name is Cat. Whenever we’re away for more than a few days I like to have someone check in on our cats. That was most important to me when Cole was an only feline child, as I knew he would really appreciate even just five minutes of … Continue reading

How Much Do You Feed Your Pets?

My dog Moose would eat until he hurt himself, if he had the opportunity. He’s not what I’d call “self-regulating” when it comes to meals. If the food is there, he’ll eat it. If my other dog’s food is there, he’ll try to eat that, too. My dog Lally, on the other hand, IS self-regulating. If she isn’t hungry, she won’t eat. If I only had her, I could leave dry food out all the time and she’d nibble throughout the day, as needed. It’s what I did before Moose joined the family! At the moment, my dogs get three … Continue reading

I’ve Become the Crazy Dog Lady

It occurred to me this evening — as I was dicing chicken and string beans for the dogs’ supper — that I’ve become the Crazy Dog Lady. I really think I crossed the line when I started making my own dog food. There was all the time spent figuring out my recipe. There was all the prep work and planning — bake the chicken, chop the veggies, cook the rice. Now I’m performing mental math, wondering how long each batch of meat, rice, and vegetables will last, and how many meals the dogs will get. Is this cost effective? Am … Continue reading

Snack Habits in My Pack

It seems that there are two types of dog: the dog who will eat anything in front of him, whenever it is available (like my dog Moose) and the dog who only eats when she’s hungry (like my dog Lally). When it comes to snacks, Moose and Lally are also very different. Moose will try anything once. Twice. Seventeen times. Lally is a much pickier eater. She only likes certain things and will disdain anything that isn’t on her list. Her likes include chicken jerky, chicken or beef flavored chewy treats, and the occasional rawhide (but only when she’s in … Continue reading

Now That’s Spicy!

I am not a fan of spicy food but interestingly, all three of my younger children are. Yep, you read that right. My four year old and two year old twins love spicy food. While I generally make my own mild salsa. . .they prefer their salsa with jalapenos if I have them. But I have a feeling even their brave bellies wouldn’t be able to stomach these chicken wings. Starting this Thursday, January 10, Jake Melnick’s Corner Tap in Chicago will begin serving chicken wings with a waiver and an alarm bell. The alarm bell is to summons wait … Continue reading
