Webkinz – Long Distance Relatives

I’m always looking for ways to stay in touch better with friends and family who are far away. My kids aren’t great about talking on the phone. And writing letters seems impossibly old-fashioned to them. So I was thrilled with a new way for them to get to know their grandmother and cousins better. A few weeks ago, my mother-in-law sent all of her young grandchildren some new stuffed animals. The animals were cute, but much more than stuffed toys. They are called Webkinz. They come with a secret code that gives the child a year’s membership to an online … Continue reading

Keeping Up With The Joneses And Others With Common Surnames

If one of the biggest challenges in your genealogy research is keeping up with the Joneses in your family tree, do not despair. Common surnames do make research challenging because it can be hard to sift through all of the potential matches for an ancestor and determine with any degree of certainty whether you have found the correct person. There are ways that genealogists with Joneses, Smiths, and other very popular surnames in their family trees have been able to locate their ancestors amongst the crowds. Here are some tips for researching ancestors with common surnames. One way to help … Continue reading

The Benefits of Online Support Groups

Parents of children with special needs can use all the support we can get, but it is often hard to find. I know for us it was nearly impossible since people with cystic fibrosis are discouraged from spending time together, therefore it is difficult for CFers and parents of CFers to meet and talk. We found a great deal of support on the internet and have benefited from it almost daily. In person support groups have their advantages. They are personal and up close allowing you to really get to know people. However, getting to know people over the internet … Continue reading

Each year our family gathers together over the Christmas period. Only twice has our while family not been together. Once was years back when our son and his wife were overseas, and I found that hard. Then this Christmas for the first time ever we did not have our daughter with us on Christmas day. She and her husband are overseas on a short term mission in a third world country. I admit when they first told me what they were thinking of going on mission, I was less than impressed. All I could think of was that our family … Continue reading

Author Interview: Loralee Evans, Part Two

Thank you for joining us for part two of our exclusive conversation with LDS historical author, Loralee Evans. If you missed part one, click here. Loralee, thank you for taking the time to talk with us again today. I’m curious — will all of your novels be based on the Book of Mormon, or will you be writing in other areas as well? I would like to branch away from writing about The Book of Mormon eventually. Fantasy is a favorite genre of mine, but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. Right now, I’m finishing up a story … Continue reading

Book Review: Expecting Miracles by Chana Weisberg

When Rebecca was pregnant with the twins, Jacob and Esau, they struggled in her belly and caused her great pain. She was having so much difficulty, that she appealed to G-d “If this be so, why am I thus?” This verse can be interpreted to mean, “This is an amazing blessing you gave to me. So why am I suffering?” In this simple cry of a righteous woman, we can perhaps hear ourselves and feel Hashem’s mercy. There is a wealth of information about pregnancy these days, with enough volumes to fill entire sections of bookstores. However, what does Judaism … Continue reading
