Single Parent Trick—Get Up Earlier Than Everyone Else

Multi-tasking, time management, wearing multiple hats—all phrases on the tip of every single parent’s tongue; but if you really want to get a jump-start on the day and add a little insurance that things will run relatively smoother—get up earlier than everyone else. When you’ve got a small child, you can still get plenty done and have a little time for yourself after the child goes to bed. With a relatively early bedtime, there can still be time for all sorts of necessary tasks and activities. But, as the child gets older, or if you’ve got more than one child—by … Continue reading

Could Your Toddler be Teething?

One of the most difficult things about life with a young toddler is that because his vocabulary is so limited, he can’t always tell you in words what is wrong. Blake is almost sixteen months old, and he makes a ton of sounds but he says very few actual words. He’s got the basics – “Mama”, “Dada”, “uh oh”, “ball”, and “mm-mm” accompanied by a  head shake to indicate “no”, but not much else. For the past four to five days, my usually energetic and bubbly little guy has been rather fussy and clingy, he has not been eating much, and … Continue reading

Wedding Rings and Gender Roles, Pt. 2

Last time I examined the discussion over whether or not men should have to wear wedding rings. Just about all of the arguments either for or against skipped one relevant consideration: whether or not women should have to or even enjoy wearing them. Only one article I found briefly acknowledged the idea: the author said that neither of her parents has worn a wedding ring for decades, for a variety of reasons. That’s all we’ve got: in the wedding rings debate we have in-depth considerations of male class traditions, shifting perspectives of masculinity, and a man’s role in a marriage, … Continue reading

Mother’s Day as a Single Parent

As a single mother we are forced to celebrate Mother’s Day a little differently. Our children are far too young to recognize and appreciate the little things we do for them day in and day out and we no longer have a husband to dote upon us for this special holiday. It becomes much like any other day; we still have to cook, we still have to clean, we still have to take care of our children, simply because there is no one else to do it for us. But just because we don’t have anyone to make us breakfast … Continue reading

Take Time To Slow Down

Is anyone else tired? I love the holidays but boy am I tired. There is so much to do and so little time to do it. When you are a single parent the time to get it all done is even more reduced, there just isn’t anyone else to help. It seems my to do list gets especially long this time of year, cooking, baking, decorating, shopping, in addition to all the other things you have to do on a normal day. I remember when Hailey was younger just wishing I could have an entire day to myself to leisurely … Continue reading

Book Review – Home Based Business for Dummies

While I would not consider myself stupid, I have found that I really like reading books from the “For Dummies” collection. The books are straightforward and informative, and presented in an engaging and sometimes humorous manner. They are very easy to digest and hard to put down. It seems like there is a guide to just about everything “For Dummies”, and home-based business is no exception. “Home Based Business for Dummies” is written by Paul Edwards, Sarah Edwards, and Paul Economy. Since I am always looking to increase my knowledge of how to succeed with my home-based businesses, I thought … Continue reading

Yogurt Biscuits

Biscuits are a common item on my breakfast table. It is also a family favorite and everyone eats more than their share. Since high fat, high carbohydrate and high calorie biscuits are not good for anyone I have sought to find a new recipe. I needed one that would not disrupt the taste buds of my harshest critics; the kids and my husband. In my efforts I came across a recipe from Weight Watchers. Weight Watchers is one diet plan which does not scrimp on taste. So, my breakfast table now serves Yogurt Biscuits which are 2 points per biscuit. … Continue reading

Mothers Make Mistakes

Let’s face it. We are all human and we all make mistakes. Mothers may be, in the eyes of their children, superheroes, and single mothers seem to have even bigger shoes to fill. Our children look to us for answers, advice and knowledge. We shape their lives, but in doing so, we have to know how to deal with our own mistakes. Earlier today, I told my son that he couldn’t sit with me because I had to get some work done. I was worried about getting everything done on time because I had fallen behind due to an illness. … Continue reading

Finding Time for One to Ones

I think one of the biggest challenges for a single parent who has more than one child is finding time to spend time together one on one—so many things tend to be done in a group. When my kids were small, we did most of our recreation as a group and if I could get them on the same sports teams, I did—just to make things do-able in terms of time management. But having that parent-child time is so important; it’s just tough for a single parent to carve that out of a busy schedule. As a parent of three … Continue reading
