The Military Commissary – A Part of Your Benefits

I’ll admit it. I have no loyalty to any particular store when it comes to purchasing groceries. Sure, I may go to the King Sooper store that is only a few blocks away when I just need a gallon of milk. I like how they drop the price to $1.50 on it’s sell by date. (When you have a little boy at home who goes through a gallon of milk every two days, that milk doesn’t have time to go bad!) I also like to buy diapers at Sam’s Club. It just makes good sense to buy something like this … Continue reading

National Military Appreciation Month

May is National Military Appreciation Month, and members of our Armed Forces and their families have been able to take advantage of some truly wonderful limited time discounts. In areas where the local economy depends on military families, local businesses have been offering specials through the month of May on many different services. Probably the most spectacular offer for active members of the Armed Forces was from Jet Blue Airlines at the beginning of May. For a few days, military passengers could book travel for the month of May on Jet Blue for $1 plus the taxes and fees. This … Continue reading

Using Expired Coupons is Legal at U.S. Military Commissaries

Let me make something absolutely clear. Stateside (within the continental United States) commissaries do not allow the use of expired coupons. Only overseas U.S. military commissaries can legally allow the use of expired coupons. Of course there is a limit. After a coupon has been expired for six months or more, it is useless even at an overseas military commissary. At that point you’ll need to dispose of the worthless coupons. Beware Scam Artists If you want to send expired coupons to an overseas military family, you should be sure that you are sending them to an actual overseas family. … Continue reading

Military week in Review

Howdy ya’ll! I’ve been very quiet this past week but thankfully this column hasn’t. I’d love to welcome Trudy Marshall-Bowler to the military family. There are many things people outside the military wonders about this whole other world and hopefully this column can show them what it is like from time to time in the military, not to mention giving advice to other military families going through the exact same thing. A few things we deal with in the military are being separated. No, not as in divorce but by being miles apart because one or both must go overseas … Continue reading

How Important is the Military ID

I’ve talked about how important a military ID card is but lets really take a look. I’m not meaning to be mean on any level but it is funny the things I noticed this week. As a child, growing up in the military meant you always carried your military ID card in your pocket, wallet or around your neck on one of those beaded chains. Do you remember that? They would even stamp a small hole in the ID somewhere so it could be looped through a necklace. Back then, I hate saying that (makes me feel old), you couldn’t … Continue reading

Things I See Living in a Military Town

I went to the New River Marine Corps Air Station. It was just a normal visit to get groceries at the Commissary. Since the North Carolina heat made it feel like it was about 1,000 degrees outside, I stopped by the Wendy’s in the shopping center next to the Commissary. I noticed two new Marines – Geiger Tigers as they are sometimes called getting out of a cab. Camp Geiger is one of the first stops for many Marines after they graduate from Marine Corps boot camp. They report to Camp Geiger to attend the School of Infantry. You could … Continue reading

Glossary of Genealogy Abbreviations

I sometimes look back at my previous posts for inspiration for new posts, or sometimes to see which topics may need a bit more elaboration. Today I want to create an extension from my genealogy glossary post from a few weeks ago. However, rather than providing you, my readers, with more genealogy terms, I want to help you understand the many genealogy abbreviations that are often used. General Genealogy Abbreviations abt. – about (sometimes also abbreviated as a. or ab.) ad. – adopted (sometimes adCL for adopted child, adD for adopted daughter, or adS for adopted son are also used) … Continue reading

Expired Coupons

If you’re like me, you are throwing out a lot of coupons now. June is over, and many manufacturers coupons expire June 30, or in the days before. Of course, you don’t have to throw them out. You can send them to an overseas commissary, where they can be used up to six months beyond expiration. Military families overseas can use expired coupons, and often benefit from donations. They spend the coupons at the local commissary or PX. This can lead to some fabulous savings for them. Don’t just go willy nilly donating your precious used coupons. (OK, dumping them) … Continue reading

Deployment And Children From A Previous Relationship

As the wife of a National Guardsman my life is usually lived in the civilian world; my husband has a civilian job as a union carpenter, we don’t live on post, I was one of the few that had any real contact with other family members of my husband’s unit due to the fact that I had been involved with the FRG for several years and the nearest commissary is over two hours away. As one can imagine I was less than prepared to have my life turned inside out when my husband was deployed to Iraq in October of … Continue reading
