Meeting About Accelerated School Closing Reveals Much

A school district in California is considering closing an accelerated school. There was a meeting held where people could voice their opinions about why they thought the school should be closed, and why they thought the school should be saved. Things were revealed that are rather shocking. Teach Elementary is part of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, in San Luis Obispo, California. It is a magnet school that is for academically accelerated students who are in the 4th through 6th grades. Specialized electives are taught by volunteers (who often are parents of students who attend the school). The … Continue reading

Lions, and Tigers, and Bears- Oh My!

One of the strangest news stories I have ever heard occurred in Zanesville, Ohio, today. Around 56 exotic wild animals were released from a private reserve by one of the owners, (who then committed suicide). There are certain types of insurance that relate to this truly unique situation. Ohio is one of eight states that do not have statewide regulations in place regarding the private ownership of exotic animals. There aren’t any federal laws that cover the possession of certain types of animals by private people, (though there are some laws that relate to circuses and zoos). People who own … Continue reading

Homeschoolers Get Swine Flu Too

This school year began with three girls in my kids’ homeschool program (1 day a week) coming down with swine flu. That was the first week. Since then many of the other kids have come down the the ailments some getting more sick than others. My kids homeschool group visited a college last week for a competition and both of my kids came home sick. I don’t believe they had swine flu because they had no fevers, but the point is, my kids do get around, and they do get sick. With tech week starting it is also common for … Continue reading

Back-to-School Bedtime Routine: Mommy vs. the Sun

Bittersweet sun, how I loved you. And by loved I mean worshipped. And by worshipped I mean in the unhealthiest ways possible. My love affair with the sun began as a young girl. Growing up in Hawaii, that scorching ball of fire in the sky was a constant companion. Not only did its rays provide me with a luminous glow that made my dingiest white shirts look radiant, but the sun also had a way of warming my inner being. Our adoration for each other deepened after I moved to the Upper Midwest. (Nine-month long Wisconsin winters will do that.) … Continue reading

Homeschoolers take back the mall

As I walked through the mall today I noticed several things. The first thing I noticed was that there were numerous school age kids in the mall with their parents. I realized they were homeschoolers, not because of dress, not because of mannerisms, but because of the way they took their time shopping and enjoying the after Christmas clearance sales. They weren’t hurried, or frazzled as shoppers have inhabited the mall for the last month or so. They were just intently examining clothing and other items and making purchasing decisions. (Experienced homeschoolers know the best time to shop is after … Continue reading

Adopted Kids’ Transition to School

It’s a big transition for parents and an even bigger step for children when a child enters “real grown-up school”. Adoptive families can anticipate the common issues this entry brings up, and often a few different ones as well. In her book Real Parents, Real Children, Holly van Gulden writes that even for children who have been in school, first grade can be a difficult time for children as they deal with being away from home all day long and coping with a day that is no longer primarily about play. (Gulden wrote nearly fifteen years ago. I believe that … Continue reading

Olympic Closing Ceremony—What Will the Chinese Blow Us Away With Next?

Frankly, I don’t know how it is humanly possible to top the brilliance displayed during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, but according to Chinese officials, viewers can expect another lavish production come Sunday. According to reports, several international stars will converge on Beijing to make the closing ceremony of the 2008 Olympics one of the most amazing spectacles the world has ever seen. Included in the all-star line up is world-famous Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, who will reportedly grace the stage in a duet with Chinese soprano star Song Zuying. In addition, insiders confirm that the ceremony will … Continue reading

The weather can cause quiet a strain over our lives. This uncontrollable factor seems to create our daily plans and influence our lives more than any other. School Lunches Getting More Expensive

And now, here is another casualty of the rising food prices, the school lunch. I have to tell you that I am getting tired of mentioning rising food prices, but there is just no way around it. The fact that food is getting so much more expensive and rising so quickly affects almost everything related to the frugal lifestyle. So bear with me as I bring you another important article related to expensive food. With food prices getting so high, I’ve been considering allowing my son to buy more school lunches instead of packing them from home. This is because … Continue reading

Tornado Warnings and Students at School

The weather is something that at times can be impossible to predict. While technology is giving us more of a heads up on when severe weather will occur, it is still hard to predict wind changes and other such factors that change the course of storms and wintery forecasts. Many of you heard or read about the tornados and storms that passed across the southern states last week. During these storms, many students were in school. Anytime that there is a threat of serve weather, teachers and administrators take a special plan of action to protect the children. Children are … Continue reading
