Getting New Clothing at the Thrift Store

Don’t want to buy your clothing at the thrift store because the idea of wearing used clothing makes you ill? What if I told you that not only can you find new clothing at your local thrift store, but you can find new designer clothing, and can even turn your thrift store shopping into a business. The biggest source of new clothing with tags at the thrift store are local and chain stores that donate substantial collections of new clothing in order to make room for the next season or style. For instance, Target generally makes large clothing donations to … Continue reading

Dolphin Intelligence Sparks New Ethics Debate

A unit in my college environmental ethics class studied the different ethics systems we follow in order to determine how we treat others. It focused on sentient verses non-sentient: the idea that some life, although not as intelligent as humanity, is still aware of itself (animal) and that other, while still alive, has no self-awareness (plant). The question of sentience was one factor used to determine what level of ethical treatment was appropriate for different members of the environment. Up until now humans for the most part have lumped all animals into one category and treated them the same: humanely, … Continue reading

New Year Deals at the Library

The month of January is one of my favorite times to visit the library. This isn’t because they have any really special programs going on or a slew of new books to check out. Instead it is because of all of the things that they no longer have, well, want. In January, our local libraries start cleaning out some things and make them available for sale to the general public. Books, magazines, CDs and movies are available at really inexpensive prices. Books Libraries get a lot of book donations close to the end of the year, as people are going … Continue reading

It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year for Thrift Store Bargains 2

As you wonder what to do with all of your leftovers, take advantage of other people’s leftovers, too…leftover stuff, that is. This is the best time of year to get wonderful merchandise for pennies on the dollar at your local thrift store. If you missed the first part of this topic posted earlier today, click here. You should also find a lot of toys, as parents, overwhelmed with all of the gifts, either donate brand new items in an effort to bring the gift giving under control, or donated older toys to make way for the new ones. I found … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: March 17 – 23

Easter is this week, and we hope each of you has a wonderful day, however you celebrate it. For some it is a momentous, wondrous occasion, which it is for me, the day my Savior rose from the grave. For others it is a whimsical day filled with candy and fun. Others may simply enjoy a day off. Our best to everyone. We started and ended this week talking about Easter, beginning with A Few Last Minute Easter Ideas and ending with Easter Bunny Questions. In between, we covered several other topics, from decorating to disaster relief. The Art of … Continue reading

Shampoo to Help Remove the Shams and Pooh of Life after an Assault.

When a person is raped, they often complain of feeling “dirty” and want to immediately scrub themselves clean. If the victim wants to report the assault to the police the necessary forensic testing for evidence gathering requires the victim to not shower until evidence has been collected. This can be a double violation. Being subjected to even more personal intrusion, the victims long to scrub their bodies clean. Hospitals offer bathroom facilities and staff are usually compassionate and accommodating. While most of us can immediately understand the emotional and mental health cost of rape, have you ever considered the financial … Continue reading

The Gift of Giving

Apparently, I jumped the gun on summer vacation. According to readers in New York, the academic year is not over. In fact, students enrolled in Brooklyn public schools don’t start summer break until the last week in June. Thanks for setting the record straight, ladies, and I feel your pain about having to deal with the chaos of end-of-the-school-year activities, including finding appropriate thank you gifts for teachers. As room mom for my daughter’s second grade class, I was responsible for soliciting monetary donations from parents, and then purchasing a birthday and end-of-the-year gift for the kids’ beloved teacher. Believe … Continue reading

What to Get at the Post-Christmas Sales

I’ve never been one for Boxing Day (or Boxing Week, or Boxing two weeks…) sales. I usually find myself so stunned after Christmas is over that I don’t want to move for a few days, let alone enter in to the consumer frenzy that is the time after Christmas. Didn’t we just go through that before Christmas? However, I must admit that I do enter the hallowed halls of the mall after Christmas upon occasion, usually do to an accident. Maybe I’m going to the library and I just happen into the place, you know? If you find yourself in … Continue reading

The Caboodle Ranch for Cats

Our society has the teasingly cruel image of a “cat lady,” an older women, usually considered a little off-balanced, who lives alone save for the many cats with which she surrounds herself. The idea is mean and contains a worrying message about the role we still consider relationships ought to play in a woman’s life. It also seems to imply that only a woman would like cats enough to want to own many. In fact, I think society still has a common assumption that cats are for women and dogs are for men; sure, we can think of plenty of … Continue reading

What You Can Do for Animal Shelters

Early in my time as Pets blogger at families.com I listed a variety of volunteering options available to those who love animals but for whatever reason aren’t able to own them. The possibilities I provided all involved volunteering with animal shelters or rescues, but I limited my suggestions to those with high levels of animal interaction. However, if you just want to share your passion for pets with those pets that don’t have any homes, shelters/rescues have several volunteering opportunities that extend beyond what I mentioned before. Specific needs obviously depend upon the particular shelter or rescue in question, but … Continue reading
