How to Save Money on School Lunches

While spending money on official school lunches may not be a bad deal, we prefer to pack our own lunches for a couple of different reasons. The first is that it is easier to control the level of nutrition that my children need (the school lunches often leave my very active, thin son still hungry), the second is that the lunch period is so short that much of it can get wasted just waiting in line for food, and the third is that it is actually cheaper for me to pack a lunch instead of paying for school lunches. Since … Continue reading

Groceries: Making a List and Checking it Twice

Sounds like a popular children’s Christmas carol doesn’t it? But making a grocery list is a serious budget keeper and money saver! Not to mention there is some truth in the “checking it twice” area. Let me teach you how to save a little money on your food, especially with the drastic rising costs. Grocery lists can be written on anything. A napkin, a scrap of paper or you can actually use those cute little pads of paper that say ‘grocery list’ at the top that you can find at popular stationary stores and other locations. Don’t spend your money … Continue reading

Frugal Living Week in Review: February 4th Through February 10th

From storing apples and using alternatives to expensive “green bags” to saving money at work, this past week has some very interesting articles. Here is the Frugal Living week in review for February 4th through February 10th. February 4th Do You Need “Green Bags?” Have you seen those new “green bags?” So far, I’ve seen them only on commercials and info-mercials. They are plastic bags that are meant for keeping produce fresh. The bags appear to be made of a lightweight plastic and are tinted green. In the commercial, the smiling lady offers examples of fruits and vegetables that have … Continue reading

The Best Bargains at the Warehouse Store

Shopping at the warehouse club stores, such as BJs, Costco or Sams Club can shave hundreds of dollars off of your annual grocery bill. But like any other grocery store, you need to compare bargains and keep track of prices to know that if what are spending for that giant jar of peanut butter will translate into actual savings. Sometimes, you can get the grocery items for much less at a regular grocery store when the item is on sale. Keeping a price book of the lowest grocery prices often helps. One thing I have found from shopping at warehouse … Continue reading

Conquering the huge task of organizing a child’s supply of toys, games, books and stuffed animals is overwhelming. So far in this series of articles I’ve discussed ways to sort and store clothing and we’ve begun working on toys. Here are some additional pointers on working with storage for toys. Remember, we are trying to avoid a trip to the store. Learning how to organize frugally is important. Deals for Members of the Military

Memorial Day has become a three day weekend that a lot of people associate with shopping and sales. The federal holiday was originally created as a day of remembrance for those who died while serving their country. Perhaps the “middle ground” between these two concepts would be represented in these deals for members of the military. Home Depot offers a 10% discount for Veterans. They also offer a 10% discount all year round for Active Duty and immediate family members of people who are in the military. The Home Depot Foundation helps address the housing needs of veterans. More information … Continue reading

She’s Just Not That Into Me

She loves me She loves me not She really loves me She really wishes I would move to another country, so she wouldn’t have to endure my constant nagging about picking up her toys… or they all go to charity. OH.YES.THEY.WILL. She is my five going on 15-year-old daughter. My precious piece of sunshine, who as a baby would squish her marshmallow cheek against my chest, as we swayed to the angelic sounds of Libera singing a haunting rendition of “Sanctus.” (I challenge you to listen to their version without tearing up.) Now she prefers the not so heavenly strains … Continue reading
